Gretna…..Philmore Robertson, Sr., age 93 of 5816 East Gretna Road, Gretna born May 16, 1921 left this world Sunday, July 13, 2014 to be with his beloved wife of 67 years Irene, and his grandson and special buddy, Ted Ashley Powell. Also predeceasing him were his parents George T. Robertson and Colie Shelton Robertson; and four brothers, Raleigh T. Robertson, Giles Robertson, and Percy E. Robertson, and their respective spouse and Lawson C. Robertson. Philmore grew up on a tobacco farm and started his first business plowing gardens for Danville residents during the Depression at age 16. He and Irene eloped at ages 18 and 16, respectively. Afterward he worked at Dan River Mills and the shipyards in Norfolk before joining the Marines in 1944. He was a Marine Veteran of World War II having earned two Purple Hearts during combat on Okinawa. After subsequent stationing in Hawaii and China, he returned to the U.S., and he and his brother Giles opened Robertson Brothers Store on Route 40 in 1946. In 1967, they sold the store and he began another career at Klopman Mills, retiring in 1983. The retirement, however, still included selling crop insurance and adjusting until in his eighties. Even then, he drove cars for various car dealerships until the last few years, working with his special friend Tony Meadows. He was very active in the Democratic Party in Pittsylvania County for many years and loved a good debate, especially with some of his more conservative acquaintances. He had a wonderful sense of humor and an amazing memory. He and Irene traveled through nearly all of the contiguous 48 states and they had many stories from every trip. He was an active member of the Masons, Anderson Lodge #258 A.F. & A.M, for 62 years including service as Master for his lodge, among other offices. He was a man who was loyal and compassionate and who tried always to do the right thing even when it wasn’t politically expedient. He was admired and loved by many and will be missed by all, especially his family who loved him dearly. The family would like to thank everyone who has visited him, driven him to doctor appointments, taken him out for meals, and brought him food, all of which enabled him to remain at home for so long. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. He is survived by one son, Philmore Robertson, Jr. and his spouse, Kathryn Caywood of West Chester, PA; one daughter, Jeanette Powell Mills of Charlottesville; two grandsons, Tim Powell and fiancé, Denis Schroeder, and Terry Powell and spouse Andrea, and their children Jessica and Garrett, and sister–in-law, Janie Robertson. Plus there are many nieces and nephews and other extended family. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 17, 2014 at Greenfield Baptist Church by Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial with Masonic Rites by Anderson Lodge #258 A.F. & A.M. will follow in Gretna Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence. The family suggests memorials be made to Greenfield Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O.
