William Carver Wagner II, of 167 Knights Hill Road, New London, NH, died peacefully at his home on July 9th. He was 81 years old and the cause of death was lung cancer. He was the husband of the Rev. Dr. Katrina R. B. Wagner with whom he celebrated ten years of wonderful marriage last October 4. They also maintained a residence in Keene Valley, NY. Prior to moving to New London in 2003, he was a longtime resident of East Petersburg (Lancaster County), PA.
Born in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Charles Christopher Wagner and the late Esther Florence Kleppinger Wagner. His first wife, Sarah Lenox (Hill) Wagner died in 1993.
Wagner was a 1950 graduate of Nazareth (PA) High School and a 1951 graduate of the Hill School, Pottstown, PA. He received his B.A.degree in economics from Duke University in 1955. At Duke he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving a 16-month tour of duty in Korea.
Prior to his retirement in 1997, he was director of business development for The Ray Group, Inc., a Lancaster (PA) architectural firm specializing in the design of major educational facilities. Previously he was employed as director of corporate planning with Huth Engineers Inc., also in Lancaster. Between 1960 and 1972, he was the executive director of the Lancaster office of the Pennsylvania Economy League, Inc.
Wagner was past-president of the Rotary Club of Lancaster, PA, which honored him with its "Service Above Self" award for his long-time fund-raising activities on behalf of the club. He was a past-member and vestryman of St. James' Episcopal Church in Lancaster, where he headed numerous major fund-raising campaigns. He also was a member of the Ausable Club, St. Huberts, NY.
In addition to his wife, Katrina, he is survived by a daughter, Grayson Mills Wagner, Bucerias NAY Mexico; a son, Christopher Lenox Wagner, Dedham, MA; a son, Benjamin Hill Wagner (husband of Oyuna and stepfather of Anand), Sterling, VA; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Bryant Harrington, Brookline, MA; and a stepson, Stearns Jackson Bryant lll, Truckee, CA.
There will be no calling hours.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July19th at 2:00 at St.Andrew’s Episcopal Church,52 Gould Road,New London,NH 03257.
Burial will be private, at the convenience of the family.
