George W. (Bill) Griswold, 92, of Anderson, IN and Venice, FL, formely of Ludlow, IL passed away on July 3rd, at Community Hospital Anderson. He was born on January 16, 1922 in Champaign, Illinois, and was a member of the Christian Church in Ludlow, IL.
George attended Gallagher school in rural Ludlow and graduated from Paxton High School, Paxton, IL in 1939. He joined the army on February 11, 1941 serving his country during World War II, in France, Italy, Africa, Germany, and Austria.
Before marriage to Beverly, he completed HVAC training in Chicago, IL. Following his marriage, he bought the former Gallagher school converting it to a home where he and his family resided for 20 years. While there, he was a plumber, sold home insurance, and farmed with his father. In 1970 he moved to Anderson where he purchased the McDonald's restaurant in downtown Anderson. Following retirement in 1987, he owned and operated Griswold Travel.
He was a life member of the VFW, and American Legion, he was also a member of 40/8, the Elks in Venice, FL; Paxton, IL; Masonic Lodge, Murat Temple of Indianapolis, International Shrine club of Indianapolis, Madison County Shrine club of Anderson, and the Madison County Legion of Honor, and former participant of the Madison County Desert Patrol; and proud member of the Society of the 3rd Infantry.
He enjoyed traveling in the United States, Europe, Central and South America, Hawaii, New Zealand, Alaska, the Greek Islands, Egypt and Israel. He also enjoyed dancing, and playing cards. He spent four years building his 1929 Mercedes and enjoyed parading in it.
George is survived by his loving spouse, Beverly (Brison) Griswold, whom he married December 19, 1948; and children, David W. (companion, Barbara Demlow) Griswold of Anderson, Kristin L. (James) Stanley of Anderson, Sherrilyn L. West of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, and James W. Griswold of Anderson; grandchildren, Julie Kowalke, Joe Griswold, Scott and Brian Martinez, Amber, Ashley, Dustin (wife, Bailey), Andrea and Sydney Griswold, and step-grandchildren, James K. (Carol) and Mike K. (Janet) Stanley, and Barbara's children, Elizabeth, Crystal, Bobbey, Katheryne; great-grandchildren, Jessika, Saylor, Caleb, Dylan, Jared, Chandler, Owen, and Serenity; nieces and nephews, Andrea Forney, Stacy Poncelow, Diane Griswold, Ralph and Bryce Bankert.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George R. and Anna B.(Watson) Griswold, granddaughter, Michele Giddings, siblings, Helen Kennedy Price, Alice Bartell Williamson, and Richard Griswold.
The family would like to thank Dr. Gallanosa, his staff, and the staff of Community Hospital for their loving care and kindness.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 8th, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm with a Masonic Service at 12:45 pm at Robert D. Loose Funeral Homes & Crematory, 200 West 53rd St. Anderson.
Services will be Tuesday, July 8th at 1:00 pm at the Robert D. Loose Funeral Home with Pastor Donna Goings officiating.
Burial will take place at Ludlow Twp. Cemetery, in Ludlow, Illinois on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. with military graveside rites. Local arrangements are being handled by Baier Family Funeral Services, Paxton.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent's Anderson Regional Hospital and/or Community Hospital Anderson.
