Donald Jack Lodle, age 87, of Ashland, Wisconsin, passed away on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at the Neighbors of Dunn County Nursing Home, in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Jack was born on November 16, 1926, in Ashland, the son of Louis ‘Butch’ and Alma (Spaeth) Lodle. He graduated from Ashland High School in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army, 41st Division and GHQ, in the Far East Theater of World War II. He and Mildred M. Gustafson were united in marriage, in Ashland, on June 12, 1954.

Donald received a teaching degree, from Northland College, in Ashland, in 1951; and a Master’s degree in physical education from Minnesota’s Bemidji State University, in 1964. He also attended the University of Wisconsin, Superior; and the University of Minnesota, Duluth, for various summer sessions.

His 37 year teaching career began at the Ondossagon High School, near Ashland, in 1953, as their physical education instructor and varsity coach for boys’ basketball, baseball and volleyball. Donald was the Athletic Director and part time physical education instructor at Ashland High School from 1967-1974. Is final fifteen years of coaching and teaching physical education were at the Ondossagon School.

Donald served as vice president of the Ashland Little League program; directing the Senior League (now Babe Ruth) for three years and managing a senior league team. He served as the Ashland summer recreation director, in 1951, and was a member of the Ashland Harbor Commission for seven years. Donald was also very active in the UMD basketball program and the Hoop Club and was a charter member of the Bulldog Club.

His retirement years were spent enjoying trolling on Lake Superior, visiting baseball spring training camps in Arizona, taking tour bus trips throughout the United States and watching his five grandchildren play football, softball, baseball, basketball, soccer and run cross country for Superior and Ashland teams.

Survivors include: his children: Nancy J. (Dean) Pufall, of Ashland; Janet (Robert) Blake, of Superior, Wisconsin; and David L. Lodle of Menomonie; grandchildren: Tony and Josh Pufall, Bryan, Chris and Britnee Blake; nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by: his wife, Mildred, on February 7, 2010; his parents; and one brother, Vernon.

A private family graveside service, for Jack, will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, July 12, 2014, at the Mount Hope Cemetery, in Ashland.
