John H. Blakes, Jr.

John “Junnie” Henry Blakes, Jr., (56) peacefully entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at his home in San Diego, CA. He was born to the late John Henry Blakes, Sr., and the late Celestine Whitaker on September 21, 1957 in Petersburg, VA. He was preceded in death by grandparents Eddie and Beatrice Blakes, Carrie Whitaker; and three sisters Lorraine Blakes, Sheila Richardson, and Kim Chambliss. John graduated from Petersburg High School in 1975. He was an exceptional First Team District Player for the Petersburg Crimson Wave. He played as an offensive lineman where he received his “Letterman” and was a team leader. John also served as an elite member in the United States Army, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and subsequently retired with an honorable discharge. He went on to continue his education and earned an honorary certificate in Computer Technology, as well as obtained a Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert (MCSE) certification. He lived to cherish his devoted wife, Darla Tobin-Blakes of San Diego, CA; and daughters Monica (Orlando) Johns, and Crystal (Richard) Spence; and grandchildren, Tyrone, Johnathan, Joshua, Olivia, and Reagan of Petersburg, VA; and four sisters, Frances Sloan, Carolyn (Thomas) Moody, Celestine Jones of Petersburg, VA. Loretta (Tony) Witherspoon of Philadelphia, PA; and one brother, William Blakes of Petersburg, VA; and two aunts, Eunice White of Waldorf, MD and Mary Goode of Petersburg, VA; and one uncle, Howard (Maude) Whitaker of Petersburg, VA; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and devoted friends. Memorial services will be held 5 p.m., Saturday, July 5, 2014, at Johnson Joseph M & Son Funeral Home, located at 530 South Sycamore Street, Petersburg, VA 23803, contact 804-863-4411. Immediate family and close friends will assemble privately for repass.
