Mr. John Bertrum “Bert” Ferrell, age 63, of Millers Creek, died Saturday, June 28, 2014 at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. He was born December 21, 1950 in Durham County to John Walter Ferrell, Jr. and Peggy Louise Medlin Ferrell. Mr. Ferrell was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church, retired with North Carolina Department of Agriculture and was a US Army Veteran. After graduation from Jordan High School in Durham, N.C. he went to Fort Bragg for basic training and served a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and a Bronze Star Medal. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Surviving are his wife, Debra Ferrell of the home; son, Ben Ferrell of Millers Creek; daughter, Emily Ferrell of Purlear; brother, Gary Ferrell and wife Mary of Durham; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held 12:00 o’clock Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Prevette and Rev. Thomas Bumgarner officiating. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guard Post 1142 will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Boiling Springs Baptist Church from 11:00 until 12:00 o’clock on Thursday, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9956 or to the donor’s choice.
