Donald I. Besler “Popey,” 81, of Farley, Iowa, died at 2:47 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at his home in Farley, Iowa surrounded by his loving family. Friends and relatives of Don may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, June 24, 2014 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa where a wake service will be held at 2:00 p.m., and a Farley American Legion Post #656 service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Services for Don will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday June 25, 2014 at the Basilica of St. Francis Xavier in Dyersville, Iowa with Rev. Dennis Quint Presiding. Burial will be held at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Key West, Iowa with full military honors. Don was born January 19, 1933 in Farley, Iowa, son of Joseph and Mollie (Soppe) Besler. He received his education from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Farley, Iowa. On November 12, 1955 he was united in marriage to Mary McLaughlin at St. Raphael’s Cathedral in Dubuque, Iowa. He was a member of the Basilica St. Francis Xavier Parish. Don was also a member of the Farley American Legion Post #656, and he was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War. He was also a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Dyersville Golf and Country Club. Don was a hard working farmer who put his wife and family first. He was also an expert horsemen who had an eye for a great horse. He spent his life enjoying the friendships and accomplishments that came with this passion. Later in life he hung up his cowboy hat for golf shoes. He grew to love a good golf shot nearly as much as a champion Quarter horse. He was a kind, loving, and devoted man who perfected the art of being a grandfather. His grandchildren and all their friends affectionately called him Popey. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years; Mary Besler of Farley, IA; five daughters; Jodie (Mike) Sheeley of Fort Meyers , FL, Jayne (Joe) Houselog of Dyersville, IA, Jean (Bob) Hingtgen of Peosta, IA, Jill (Paul) Brown of Farley, IA, and Janel (Dr. Todd) Kluesner of Farley, IA; 14 grandchildren; Paul, John, and Lauren Sheeley, Nic Houselog, Hannah, Heidi, and Ben Hingtgen, Joe, Jim, Jon, and Jenna Brown, Caroline, Anna, and Jack Kluesner; 6 sisters; Jean (Mike) Knepper of Dyersville, IA, Shirley (Jim) Manternach of Monticello, IA, Verla (Pat) Horsfield of Epworth, IA, Norma (Jim) Butcher of Farley, IA, Helen (Dick) Schnier of Dyersville, IA, and Theresa (Steve) Gulyash of Dubuque, IA; one sister-in-law, Venita McLaughlin of Dubuque, IA. He is preceded in death by his parents; one son; Paul Besler May 21, 1976, One grandson in infancy Anthony M. Wolf, one nephew; Mark Healy, sister and brother-in-laws; Patricia and Ed Healy and TJ McLaughlin. Don’s family would like to thank Karla, Malleri, Janet, Linda, and Bailey for the special care they provided in his last days. Our hearts are forever connected by the deep affection he had for you. A special thanks also to the staff of Helping Hands and Hospice of Dubuque.
