Phillis McNeil, 96, of Froid Montana peacefully passed away on June 15th, 2014 at the Sheridan Memorial Nursing Home in Plentywood Montana.
Born May 7th 1918, she was the third child of Christian and Alice Winter of Medicine Lake Montana. She graduated from Medicine Lake High School in the spring of 1936 and enrolled at the College of Great Falls where she received her Teaching Certificate. She taught high school commercial classes in Brockton, Flaxville, Medicine Lake and Froid. She also taught in rural schools east of Froid and north of Culbertson. During her time teaching she met Jim McNeil and they were married after the war on July 9, 1945.
After starting their family, Phillis excelled in being an accomplished tailor, knitter, gardener, baker and an all around master homemaker.
Phillis had natural leadership skills and was very active in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Altar Society, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, Froid Women’s Club, Area Council on Aging and Froid Senior Citizens.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Alice, her sister and brothers, Rhoda, Clayton, Bernard and George Winter. Jim, her husband of 49 years, also preceded her in death in November 1993. She is survived by her children John (Shirley) McNeil of Froid, Bill (Joan) McNeil of Winona Minnesota, Dan McNeil of Froid and Karen (Barry) White of Kent Washington. Also surviving are her seven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Phillis lived her life with a dauntless faith in God and spread warmth and love to all the people she touched in her life. She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and above all a friend to all.
There will be a wake honoring Phillis at 7pm on Wednesday on June 25th at St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Culbertson and Funeral services at 11am June 26th at St Anthony’s.
The family asks that memorials be made to St. Anthony’s Catholic Church or Charity of donors choice.
