U.S. Veteran

Wayne Gene Meaders, 84, of McAlester, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Mitchell Manor Convalescent Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 23 at Pryor Cemetery Chapel with Rev. Jim Gantt officiating. Interment will be at Pryor Cemetery. Service arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

Born April 19, 1930 in Ashland to O.F. and Vera (Wimberly) Meaders, Wayne grew up and received his education in Ashland, graduating high school in 1948.

Following high school, Wayne served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was married to Mildred “Millie” Turpen on April 12, 1958 in Reno, Nevada. They made their home in California, where Wayne worked in the cement business. In 1976, they retired to Stuart, Oklahoma where Wayne found enjoyment in ranching.

He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and tinkering.

Wayne is survived by his son: Nate Meaders and wife, Kari of Checotah; grandchildren: Cory Meaders of Tahlequah, Ty Meaders of Checotah, Kira Meaders of Checotah; sister: Helen Burkes and husband, Bill of Claremore.

Also, sisters-in-law: Gwen Meaders of Randlett, Mary Nell Meaders of Burkburnett, Texas, JoAnn Smith of Seminole, Judy Pratt of Elkhart, Texas; brother-in-law: Chester Watts of Norman; special cousins: Dewey Wimberly and wife, Pat of Stuart; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father: O.F. Meaders; his mother: Vera (Wimberly) Meaders; step-mother: Eula Meaders; wife: Mildred “Millie” Meaders on November 20, 2010; sister: Lorreta Watts; brothers: Marl Meaders and Wayland Meaders; and an infant brother: Owen Meaders.

Honorary pallbearers will be Cory Meaders, Ty Meaders, Brent Burkes, Levi Wimberly, and Dale Wimberly.
