Ferdinand A. Luers

Ferdinand Aloysius Luers passed away on June 17, 2014. He was the beloved husband of Donna Jane Luers (nee: Holland); loving father of Tina-Marie (late Michael) Cochran, Katharina Elizabeth (Christopher) Pelkey, Suzanne (Robert) Staiton and Michael (Megan) Luers; dear grandfather of Timothy (Meghan), Kristin, Kelly, Amanda, Frederick, Josef, Scott, Katelyn and Thomas; uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Bethani Jane Werner. “Ferdy” or “Freddy” as he was known, was born to Ernst and Elise Luers on September 9, 1929 in Damme, Germany where he joined his brother Ernst, sister Maria and 6 dear half brothers and sisters. He came to the United States in 1957 where he became a butcher for Otto & Son’s; the company he retired from after 40 years of loyal employment. Of his many accomplishments, he was proud to be an integral part of product development for the McDonald’s Corporation through his work with OSI. The young butcher from Germany also met his devoted wife at Otto’s where she also worked as a cashier. Together they created a close-knit, loving family with their children. Many of his friends, family and colleagues will remember him always with a quick wit, ready with a limerick or joke to share. He dearly loved to entertain with an old German folk song played on his harmonica with tears in his eyes, reflecting memories of his beloved “old country”. On Friday, June 20, there will be a funeral mass at 10 a.m. with a one hour visitation prior starting at 9 a.m. at St. Petronille Catholic Church, 420 Glenwood Ave, Glen Ellyn. In lieu of flowers, donations to Ronald McDonald House Near Cadence Health – CDH in memory of Ferdinand Luers, appreciated. http://rmhccni.org/cadence.
