Mykola “Mike” Marchenko, Jr. 87, of Sugar Hill, Georgia passed away on Friday June 13, 2014. Mike is survived by his four children, Catherine Saidat, George and Bill Marchenko, Natalie Connery, their spouses, as well as seven grand-children and ten great grand-children. Mike was born in Ukraine and moved to America after the 1940’s war years with his father Mykola and mother Anna.
He was soon accepted to Northwestern’s mathematics masters program after earning a degree in mathematics from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Afterwards, Mike joined IBM and held successful positions in sales and education, his lifelong passion. Over the years Mike taught higher mathematics classes at Oglethorpe University and Georgia Tech. He had the gift of making the complex understandable.
Mike lost his beloved wife Alla in 2007 and remained in the Sugar Hill, GA area until December 2013 when he moved in with Catherine Saidat and her husband David in South Carolina, where he passed away. Mike is remembered by his poker buddies with whom he enjoyed a friendly game of cards once a month for over 30 years.
He is remembered fondly by relatives and longtime friends. He is also remembered by the great many people whose lives he touched and who touched his life over the years. He was a student of baseball and enjoyed watching every Braves game possible, often arranging his schedule to be in front of the TV for game time. Mike was a gentleman of gentlemen; kind, generous and forgiving. The Marchenko family is blessed to have a lifetime of fond memories and to have benefitted from the wisdom, friendship, patience and love from this wonderful man. May God bless and forever hold Mike Marchenko.
