Raymond J. “Sonny” Thompson, 77, of Middletown, DE passed away quietly at home surrounded by his family on June 6, 2014.
Sonny was born on April 20, 1937 and was a lifelong resident of Middletown, DE. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corp. He enjoyed his many years as a heavy equipment operator with the Local Union #542. Since his retirement, he has enjoyed keeping his yard meticulous, watching a variety of sports, and caring for his family, friends, and neighbors. He also was an avid collector of numerous memorabilia. His quick wit and humor will be sadly missed by all.
He is survived by Eleanor Rawley. Together, Eleanor and Sonny, have raised a family and shared a loving relationship for 36 years. He is survived by his daughters, Kimberley and Shelley Thompson , Lisa O’Grady (Kevin), and Barbara Short (Chris); his 6 grand-daughters, Samantha Baese, Breanna O’Grady, Taylor Short, Julia Short, Rhiannon Thompson, and Jennifer Thompson. Sonny is also survived by his brother, Larry Thompson (Sheila) and a cousin who was like a brother, Bobby Thompson (Jane). He also loved his extended family, which consisted of Eleanor’s brothers and sisters and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was pre-deceased by his sister, Jeanette Thompson.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank all of the staff at Delaware Hospice for their outstanding care and support, most especially, his nurse, Michelle, who he adored.

Visitation will be held at Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, DE 19709 on Thursday, June 12th from 12-2. A service in celebration of Sonny’s life will be at 2 pm. Interment will be at Old Bohemia Cemetery in Warwick, MD.
