Mary Agnes Borgman

Mary Agnes Borgman, 96 of Kingwood passed away June 4, 2014 at Heartland of Preston County. She was born August 23, 1917, in Morgantown, daughter of the late Garrett Edmund and Charlotte Anne Richards Borgman and was the last surviving member of her family.

She was a retired first grade teacher and County Reading Coordinator, working for 42 years in the Preston County Schools. She taught at Manheim, Howesville and Kingwood Elementary Schools. Her greatest reward was teaching children to read.

She was a graduate of Kingwood High School, Fairmont State College and West Virginia University.

Miss Borgman was an active member of St. Sebastian Catholic Church, serving as a lector, choir member and altar society member. She served in many local and state organizations and was a charter member of the Preston County Reading Council. She has given a scholarship for several years to a senior who planned to be an elementary teacher. In 1988 she was Honorary Parade Marshal of the Preston County Buckwheat Festival School Day parade. She was interested in reading, music, and world travel.

Miss Borgman was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for women teachers, Kingwood Women’s Civic Club. American Legion Auxiliary, WV State Reading Association, Preston County Retired School Employees, Friends of the Library, and the Preston County Historical Society. She helped to organize Hospice Care Corporation, and was a charter member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

She was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers: Grace, Wilfred, John and Earl Borgman and nieces, Margaret Borgman and Mary Ann Stresau. She is survived by two nieces, Karen Strathaus of California, and Milissa Smith of South Carolina; and two great nieces, Charlotte Smith and Chelsea Strathaus.

Friends may call at Browning Funeral Home in Kingwood on Sunday, June 8 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A prayer service will be held at 8:00 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Sebastian Catholic Church Monday, June 9, 2014 at 10 a.m. with Father John Peck, OSB as celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Howesville.
