Durham – Mrs. Mary Frances Council White, widow of the late Thomas S. White, Jr., died peacefully August 6, 2008 surrounded by members of her family.
Mrs. White was the daughter of the late Carl C. Council, former publisher of the Herald-Sun newspaper, and Mary Stuart Council. She was a member of Duke Memorial United Methodist Church, the Minnie P. Gates bible class, a sustaining member of the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties, and the Debutante Ball Society of Durham. She was a graduate of Durham High School, attended Hollins College in Virginia, and graduated from Duke University.
Mrs. White is survived by her sons, Thomas S. White, III and his wife, Mary, of Florence, AL, Carlyle C. White and his wife, Debbie, of Durham; daughter, Mary White English and her husband, John, of Landgrove, VT; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. White was preceded in death by her brother, Carlyle C. Council, Jr., who was killed in action in Italy while serving in the US Army during WWII.
A graveside funeral service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, section one. Officiating will be Revs. Roger Owen and Ginger Thomas.
