Elizabeth May Hurd Greene, 87, a longtime resident of Shaftsbury, VT entered into peaceful sleep on Sunday May 25, 2014 where she awaits the Lords second coming.
She was born in Stratton, VT January 18, 1927. She was the daughter of the late Floyd Hurd Sr. and Zoe (Linscott) Hurd. Liz received her early education in Stratton and later attended South Lancaster Academy in South Lancaster, MA. She married Donald Edmund Greene March 23, 1947 in Bennington, VT. Mr. Greene died June 8, 2002.
In earlier years Mrs. Greene had been employed at the EZ Mill, Thomson Manufacturing and Tansitor Electronics. For several years she was employed at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center as the Ward Secretary on North Wing. She was also a provider of Home Health and Hospice Care.
A very gifted woman, she was the guiding light and rock of the family. Liz was known for her natural remedies. She had a love of nature and the outdoors. She also enjoyed snowmobiling, fishing, gardening , knitting and traveling. Liz enjoyed attending Blue Grass Festivals and was a devout member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include five sons, Peter A. Greene of Pawlet, VT, Gary E. Greene of Stuyvesant Falls, NY, Anthony D. Greene of Bennington, VT, David A. Greene of Arlington, VT and Samuel P. Greene of North Hebron, NY. A daughter Patricia L. Greene of Sandgate, VT.; twenty five grandchildren, twenty eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; three sisters Doris Paquette of Cornwall, VT, Marion Beaver of Oregon and Dorothy Johnson of South Lancaster, MA, three brothers, Charles Hurd of West Paris, Maine, Howard Hurd of Athol, MA and Floyd Hurd Jr. of Bryant Pond, Maine, several brother in laws, sister in laws, son in laws and daughter in laws and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by two daughters, Susan E. Smead and Donna Lee Greene, a son Donald E. “Gibby” Greene and a grandson, Jesse Greene, three brothers, Forrest, Carl and Ralph Hurd and three sisters Evelyn Whitehurst, Margaret Mallory and Mary Peterson.
Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday May 30 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m and then again on Saturday May 31 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
The funeral will be held on Sunday June 1, at 11:00 a.m at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Houghton Lane in Bennington.
The burial will follow in the family lot at Center Shaftsbury Cemetery in Shaftsbury, VT
