Former Lebanon resident Katie Anne Brown, 28, died late Sunday night, May 18, 2014, in a single vehicle motorcycle accident in Binghamton, New York. Survivors include her mother Lisa Capaldo (Frank) of Albany, NY and father Mark Brown (AJ) of Raleigh, NC. Also surviving is a brother, Sam Brown; stepsisters, Courtney Bubenicek, Lauren and Megan Capaldo, and stepbrothers Connor and Alex Thomas.
Katie was a 2004 graduate of Lebanon High School, a 2008 graduate of DePauw University and a 2010 graduate of Binghamton University. She had served as a police officer with the Binghamton Police Department since 2011. This year, during Police Week in Binghamton, she received a commendation bar for life saving. There will be a memorial service honoring Katie with her parents and the Binghamton Police Department in Binghamton, NY at a later date.
Katie had a huge heart, and a strong desire to help those less fortunate. During her youth, she participated in various mission trips organized through Central Christian Church and Centenary United Methodist Church in Lebanon. She helped construct a new roof for a home in rural Tennessee, and worked with children and farmers in Honduras on two different visits. During her time at DePauw, she traveled to Ghana to volunteer at a rural medical center, helping deliver much-needed care and medicine. Katie was determined to help others, and she had the courage to go where the conditions were most dire.
Family and friends will gather Friday, May 23, 2014 for visitation from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. in the Strawmyer & Drury Mortuary, 2400 N. Lebanon Street, Lebanon. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 24 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jim Powell officiating at Central Christian Church, 311 E. Main Street in Lebanon.
