“Retired Principal“

Mr. Joseph A. Mercier, 82 of Waterbury, passed away Friday, May 16, 2014 at Waterbury Hospital. He was the loving husband of the late Alice (Vanasse) Mercier.

Joseph was born in Waterbury on April 15, 1932, son of the late Emil and Yvonne (Laferriere) Mercier. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart School Class of 1950. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served his country honorably during the Korean War in Japan & Fort Bragg, N.C. He earned a B.S. from UCONN, a Master’s Degree at Central Connecticut State College and 6th Year of Advanced Study at Fairfield University in education. He was a math teacher in Waterbury from 1959 thru 1963 and also taught at Heminway Park in Watertown from 1963 thru 1968. He was Vice Principal of Gordon Swift Jr. High School in Watertown from 1968 thru 1972 and then Principal from 1972 thru 1991 when he retired. His civic service includes the Waterbury Charter Revision Commission and the Waterbury Civil Service Commission during the 1960’s. He was a longtime volunteer with the VNA Catering With Care Program. For several years he was a tutor with The Children’s Community School. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Wolcott, CT and the Waterbury Elks Lodge # 265. He enjoyed family gatherings, traveling, golf, walking the trails at Hop Brook, and was an avid Red Sox & UCONN Huskies fan!

He leaves two sons, Andrew Mercier of Waterbury and Matthew Mercier and his wife Sandra of Terryville, his sister Jeanette Donohue of Watertown along with many nieces, nephews and their families.

Arrangements: Funeral will be held Wednesday, 9:00 a.m. at Chase Parkway Memorial/The Albini Family Funeral Home, 430 Chase Parkway, Waterbury to Blessed Sacrament Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery with Full Military Honors. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home
