Leo Slusher

Robert Leo Slusher, age 90 of Franklin, WV, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014 at his residence. He was born on October 21, 1923 in Floyd, VA, the son of William Harrison and Louise (Davis) Slusher. On November 6, 1948, Leo married Juanita Slusher, who survives in Franklin.

Mr. Slusher was a graduate of Floyd High School and a WW II Veteran of the US Army. He was a charter member of the Pendleton County Sports Boosters, and a member of the Brandywine Christian Church where he was Treasurer for 50 years. He was Team Leader of the “Eradicators”, Relay for Life and he was an avid card player and golfer, and loved to dress as Santa Clause for various organizations. Leo was a member of the Franklin Moose Club #769 where he served as administrator for many years. He retired after 30 years of service from Nationwide Insurance Company and he had also worked for 4 years for the Department of Highways.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Slusher is survived by: a daughter, Dr. Cathy Slusher and husband Don Flegel of Harrisonburg, VA; a son, Donald Phares and wife Vicki of Harrisonburg; 3 sisters, Hazel Rutrough of Floyd, VA, Betty Nestor and husband Bob of Floyd, Lelia Coates of Danville, VA; 2 brothers, Tom Slusher and wife Phyllis of Wake, VA, Bud Slusher and wife Betty of Floyd; 5 grandchildren, Drew Clements, Julie Clements, Macie Clements, Matthew Phares, and Aspen Phares. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: a daughter, Connie Clayton; 3 brothers, Lewis Slusher, Bill Slusher, Joe Slusher; and a sister, Julie Slusher.

Mr. Slusher's family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, 2-4 & 6-8 PM at the Basagic Funeral Home in Franklin. Funeral services will be on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Larry Danner and Dr. Greg Bowers officiating. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Franklin with military graveside services conducted by the Pendleton County Veterans Honor Guard.
