Joan M. Steenburn

Joan M. Steenburn, 81, a former resident of Emeritus at Fillmore Pond died Tuesday May 6, 2014 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, VT.

She was born in New Rochelle, New York June 13, 1932. She was the daughter of the late Douglas and Elsa (Kent) Manson.

Joan received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from California State College in PA. Joan was a third grade teacher.

She married Douglas Steenburn in 1952. Mr. Steenburn died in 1999.

Joan was an active member of the Zion Episcopal Church in Branford, CT. Over the years Joan and her family were host’s to many foreign exchange students who attended Yale and Princeton University. Joan enjoyed fashion, going to tag sales, playing Bridge and Bingo, and spending her summers at the family camp in Unity, New Hampshire. She was very fond of her beloved dog “Molly”.

Survivors include a daughter Holly Schmitz and her husband Mark of Bennington. A son Jeff Steenburn and his wife Rachel of Lewiston, Maine. Her grandchildren, Sara Steenburn of Portland, Maine, Megan Schmitz of Wallingford, CT, Greg Schmitz of Williamstown, MA, and Mark and Frank Steenburn of Colton Point, Maryland. A daughter in law, Alvonne Wimmer and her husband Ron of Colton Point, Maryland; a sister Jill Walker and her husband Hamish of Edinburgh, Scotland; two nieces, Noelle Humphrey-Gaskin and her husband Frank of Cheltenham, England and Anna Walker of Inverness, Scotland. She was pre-deceased by a son Mark Colton Steenburn and her nephew Simon Walker.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Joan M. Steenburn will be held on Saturday May 10, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Peters Episcopal Church in Bennington, VT.
