Harry Edwards

U.S. Veteran

Harry Edwards, age 91, of Metropolis, IL, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 at Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis. He was born in Brookport, IL on May 15, 1922.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Metropolis with Bro. Louis W. Brinker and Bro. Joe Buchanan officiating. Burial will follow in the Metropolis Memorial Gardens with military rites.

Mr. Edwards graduated from Metropolis Community High School, where he played basketball under coach Dutch Schneeman. After graduating, he joined the Marin Corps 4th Marine Bivision and spend 3 ½ years in the South Pacific Islands of Saipan, Roi-Namur, Tinian, and Iwo Jima, where over 17,000 Marines were lost. He was one of the 8 men in his division that survived. He was awarded the Bronze Star, President Unit Citation, and Sharpshooter Medal. After completing his military service, he was employed by Bonifield Bros Truck Lines of Metropolis for a number of years. He retired from the State of Illinois.

Harry is survived by his wife of 68 years, Adeline; his son, Don and wife Connie of Metropolis; 1 brother, George Jr. and wife Faye of Louisville, KY; his grandsons, Brian Edwards and wife Charlene of Brookport, and Rodney Edwards and wife Amy, of Jackson, MO; granddaughters Kristi Cavaness of Cape Girardeau, MO, Kimberly Edwards of Jackson, MO, Wendy Johnson and husband Mark of California, and Jennifer Burroughs and husband Tim of Jackson, MO; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Myrtle Edwards; son, Dennis Edwards; infant son, Michael; brothers, Wayne and Curtis; and sisters, Mary and Dorothy.

Visitation will be held on Monday evening, May 12, 2014 from 6 til 8 p.m. at the Miller Funeral Home.
