Clarence J. Couture, 78 of Duluth, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at St. Luke’s Hospice, with his family by his side. Clarence was born December 10, 1935 in Duluth to Clarence and Leona Couture. He attended Cathedral High School and served in the US Army from 1958-1960. Clarence married Lucille Sharpe on August 5, 1961. He joined the family painting business and worked as a painting contractor for more than 50 years, retiring from Couture Painting Co. in 2004. During his career, Clarence painted countless churches, businesses and residences in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. He was a masterful painter and artist, touching the lives of thousands, including President Kennedy when Clarence painted the Hotel Duluth in preparation for his visit in 1963. Clarence was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Painters Local Union 106 and BPO Elks 133; was active in the Duluth Heights Community Club, serving as a coach, Rink Director, and President of the Duluth Heights Hockey Association for several years. He enjoyed camping, fishing and UMD Bulldog Hockey, but most of all spending time with his family. He was a kind and caring husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Leona; brothers, Robert and Lionel “Lee”. Clarence is survived by his wife, Lucille; children, David (Lisa), Daniel (Debra), DeLaine (George) Brown and Darren (Jessica); grandchildren, Emily, Kegan, Andre`, Elizabeth, Kasey, Kyler, Andrew, Stephan, Megan and Colin; siblings, Jackie (Robert) Fulton, Jeanine (Tom) Halverson and Bill (Lorene) Couture. Visitation will begin Monday with a Wake Prayer at 5pm with visitation continuing until 7pm in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Tuesday from 11am to the 12 noon Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, 2801 E 4th St. Duluth.
