Mildred Brown Shands, the daughter of the late Ethel and David Brown, was born May 4, 1933, in Dinwiddie, Va. She stepped into the portals of glory on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at VCU Medical Center.
Mildred received her formal education in the Dinwiddie County Public School System, graduating from Dinwiddie Training School. She continued her education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, N.C., and John Tyler Community College, where she received an associate of science degree in psychology.
Mildred gave her life to Christ at an early age as she was reared in Mount Level Baptist Church in Dinwiddie. After she was married, she became a faithful member of Olive Branch Baptist Church and served the church in any way she could. She was the chair of the Missionary Ministry and an active member of the T.A. Lacy and Mass choirs. She was also a member of the Petersburg Triad.
Mildred retired from Central State Hospital after over 30 years of service. She genuinely loved helping her family. She enjoyed traveling, sewing and quilting. She enjoyed spending time with both immediate and extended family.
Mildred was united in holy matrimony to Anthony M. Shands for 49 years, 10 months and 18 days. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, Blanche Brown, Eyvonne Gray and Ethel Woodard; brothers, William, Sam, Amos, James and Joe Louis Brown; sisters-in-law, Pearl Smith, Florence Head, Lillian Shands, Mattie Shands, Queenie Brown, Alberta Brown and Florence Brown; and brother-in-law, William Shands.
Left to cherish her memories and celebrate her life are: daughter, Michale Shands; sons, James Shands (Tracy), Pierre Shands (Henrietta); brothers, Raymond (Bertha) and Russell Brown; sister, Ada Hilliard; grandchildren, Princess, Pierre Jr. and Parnellé Shands, Dominic Stewart, Franqué Alexander, Michael J. Green, Anthony Shands (Gaynell); great-grandsons, Michael B. Green, Anthony Jackson and Shawn Shands; sisters-in-law, Annette Shands, Inez Shands (Dan), Elizabeth Brown, Orene Brown and Mary Brown; brothers-in-law, Wesley (Joan), Earl Shands (Phyllis) and Langston Shands.
A funeral service will be held be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, at the Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, with the pastor, the Rev. Kevin M. Northam, officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Public viewing will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Petersburg Chapel.
