Deferiet - Stephen J. (Pawelczyk) Powell, 97, of 34131 NYS Rt. # 3., died Tuesday, May 6, 2014, in the Samaritan Medical Center after a brief illness. He was under the care of his family and the Long Term Home Health Care Program of Jefferson County.
Stephen was born in Deferiet on April 25, 1917, the son of the late Michael and Josephine Vojcik Powell. He attended school in Deferiet and graduated from Augustinian Academy in Carthage. He served in the Navy during World War II from October or 1942 to November of 1945. He married the former Mary Hornig at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Black River on February 22, 1954. Steve retired as the chief electrical operator with the St. Regis Paper Co. in Deferiet after 47 years of service. Mrs. Powell died on April 15, 2010. He was a communicant of St. Rita’s Church, a member of the American Legion Post # 789, Carthage, BPOE Lodge # 1762, Carthage, I.B.E.W, former Financial Secretary for Local 56 at St. Regis and former President (25 yrs.) of the St. Regis Rod and Gun Club. He loved deer hunting and fishing, vegetable gardening, mushrooming, watching sports, especially the Yankees, polka music and spending time at his camp in Belfort.
He is survived by his children, two daughters: Kathryn (Timothy) Campbell of Lake George, Kristine (Joseph) White of North Syracuse, four sons: James (Karen) Powell of Calcium, John Powell of Deferiet, Daniel Powell of Deferiet and San Francisco, CA and Nicholas (Leilani) Powell of San Francisco, CA, 6 Grandchildren, Mary Hastings, Matthew Campbell, Jennifer and David White and Stefan and Darby Powell, 4 Great Grandchildren, Caleb & Kenadie Hastings, Saylor Campbell and Corbin Wipperman, a sister-in-law, Ann Hornig of Lowville and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Stephen is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Mary, and his siblings Lawrence, John, Susan, Mary, Michael and Joseph Powell. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 12th at 11:00 AM at St. Rita's Church, Deferiet with the Rev. Robert L. Decker, Pastor officiating. Burial with military honors will be in St. James Cemetery, Carthage. Calling hours at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home will be on Sunday from 5-8pm.
