Vera Mae Durant

Vera Mae (Coop) Durant, 88, of Scipio, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at McAlester Regional Health Care Center.

The family will receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Bishop Funeral Service.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 7 at the North Town Church of Christ with Mr. Kevin Kasparek officiating. Interment will be at Lone Grove Cemetery. Service arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service.

Born to George W. and Gladys (Hamilton) Coop on November 9, 1925 near Scipio, she graduated from Stuart High School. She lived in Pittsburg County with the exceptions of following her husbands who worked in the oil fields and took her all over Oklahoma.

She enjoyed reading, attending church and hunting and fishing. She worked as a Nurse’s aide for McAlester General and worked for Pittsburg County Election Board for several years.

She married Easmon Durant August 1, 1946 at McAlester and they had and raised four children and after his death she married Arbie Durant November 9, 1981 in McAlester and they raised two children.

She was a member of North Town Church of Christ.

She is survived by a son: Easmon Durant of Denver, Colorado; daughter: Dawana Durant-Salehian of Yucca Valley, California; son: Jimmy Lee Durant and wife, Cecile of Switzerland; grandchildren: Giovanna Durant, Helena Durant, Justin Richardson, Vera Dawn Durant, Michelle Durant, Nicolette Ann Aranas-Harris, Christie Bigornia, Jake Bigornia, Kristin Blackman, Kelsie Blackman.

Also, great-granddaughters: Alexandra Richardson, Abigail Harris, newborn baby girl Harris; brother: Bill Coop and wife, Jeanie of McAlester, Oklahoma; sister: Syble Stone of McAlester; brother-in-law: Don Durant and wife, Georgia of McAlester; sisters-in-law: Faye Durant of McAlester, Addie Bell Nichols-Chastain of Tivoli, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents: George W. and Gladys Coop; first husband: Easmond Durant; second husband: Arbie Durant; 3 children: Stephen Durant in 1994, Julia Ann Durant in 2006, Kathy Sue Blackman in 1999; brother: Dempsey Coop in 2012; infant sisters: Mollie Jo Coop in 1933 and baby girl Coop in 1920.

Pallbearers will be Oben Weeks, Earl Weeks, Mike Maffeo, Robert Carey, Jack Pitts, and Larry Whinery.

Honorary pallbearers will be Church Elders: Buddy Cable, Frank Ball, Butch Good, Jim Kelly, Dean Wood, and Mark Cates.
