Joe Preston Holder

U.S. Veteran

Joe Preston Holder passed from this life on the 3rd day of May, 2014, at the age of 94 years, 4 months, and 8 days.   Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at the Bishop Cemetery near Lipan, Texas.

Mr. Holder was born December 25, 1919 in Lipan, Texas, the sixth of seven children of Jess Thomas Holder and Hattie Lou (McCauley) Holder.  On July 31, 1959 he married Wynona Floyene (Flo) Tibbets in Haskell, Texas.  After 43 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on October 29, 2002.

Mr. Holder served his country as a glider mechanic in the Army Air Force during World War II, and was stationed in the Philippines for much of that time. After the war, he was self-employed as a carpenter and farmer/rancher. He moved to Haskell, Texas in the mid 1950’s where he met his wife and raised his family.  He remained there until December 2004, when he moved to Bonham, Texas due to health reasons.

Joe was a gentle, selfless man who never knowingly did anything that would prove burdensome to others. His quiet strength caused him to be well-respected. Joe made it a point to never say anything negative about another person. He had a sharp wit, and loved to tease.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents & all six of his siblings: brothers Clarence, Clyde, and Garland Holder, and sisters Faye McKinzey, Opal Meyen, and Jessie Lou Yeates.

Surviving are his two children, Melissa Gayle Stegall and husband Rodney of Abilene, Texas, and Bernie Lee Holder and wife Terri of Ector, Texas. Survivors also include six grandchildren: Darcy Holder of Ector, Texas; Nadia Jenkins of Bells, Texas; Lindsey Baker of Bonham, Texas; Keleigh Compton of Dodd City, Texas; Jason Reynolds of Magnolia, Arkansas; and Will Stegall of Abilene, Texas. Joe was blessed with four great-grandchildren: Ryan Compton, Ronni Compton, Malin Compton, & Justin Jenkins.

He will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends at Wise Funeral Home in Bonham, Texas from 6:00-7:00 P.M. Monday, May 5, 2014
