Helen Butler

Helen Butler, age 92, beloved wife of David Butler, died on Saturday, May 3, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She had been married to David for 65 years prior to his death on April 4, 2014. She was born on February 22, 1922 in Pawtucket, RI and was the fifth of eight children born to Mary and Abraham Carter.

Helen was a woman ahead of her time, playing on a woman’s softball team in the 1940’s. Once married, Helen managed the home, house, and children while working full time as a seamstress and then a waitress. Family was the main focus of her life - always. She took great pride in her Mid-Eastern heritage and enjoyed cooking, crocheting, sewing, pickling, family gatherings, and seaside trips. Always an achiever, she learned to swim at age 68. In 1972, she was overjoyed as the next generation made its entrance into the Butler family. She is survived by her six children: Sharon Harrington of Pascoag, Audrey Monti of Ellington, CT, Donna Birt of Pawtucket, David Butler of Tampa, FL, Richard Butler of Stafford Springs, CT and James Butler of Marblehead, MA. Grandchildren Kristin, Russell, Heather, Karen, Lisa, Jennifer, Adam, Kevin, John, Haley, Morgan and Kendall have been a constant source of great pride and activity. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she has eight great grandchildren. Helen was predeceased by her two granddaughters, Kristin and Lisa.

Helen is also survived by her three sisters: Alice Bessette of Land O Lakes, FL, Florence McDonald of Cumberland, RI and Emily Lagerquist of Seekonk, MA as well as many dear nieces and nephews. Her siblings Charles and Fred Carter, Mae Najjar and Rhoda Zora predeceased her.

The family offers their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff at Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pascoag, RI, who cared for Helen with dignity and respect.

Her funeral will be held Wednesday, May 7th at 10 a.m. from WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, followed by Services at 11 a.m. in the Historic Swan Point Chapel, 585 Blackstone Blvd., Providence. Interment will follow. VISITATION will be Tuesday, May 6th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. The family has requested in lieu of flowers that donations be offered in Helen’s name to Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 14 Rock Street, Pascoag, RI 02859 or to the Episcopal Conference Center, General Operations, 872 Reservoir Road, Pascoag, RI 02859.
