Carthage - Jeremiah J. Haley, 76, of 34198 Pleasant Lake Drive, died Friday, May 2, 2014, in the Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown where he has resided since suffering a stroke in 2008.

Jerry was born in Danville, PA on May 21, 1937, the son of the late Jeremiah J. and Anna Dean Haley. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Williamsport, Pa in 1955 and attended Seton Hall Prep later graduating in 1961 from Mansfield State College, Pa. Mr. Haley went on to earn a master’s degree from Cortland State University.

Mr. Haley taught 7th grade Social Studies for twenty five years in the Carthage Central School System starting in 1964. Here he made many friends and greatly enjoyed teaching his students each and every year.

Mr. Haley along with four partners started the JRECK Subs Inc. chain out of an old school bus located outside the original main gate of Ft. Drum. He went on to successfully run the State and Washington St. sub shops in Watertown along with the Ft. Drum location for many years.

Jerry was an avid golfer and member of Carlowden Country Club for many years and the Carthage Elks Lodge # 1762.

 He married the late JenNee C. DeWalt on December 12, 1957. Mrs. Haley died on September 28, 2013. He is survived by one son: Jeremiah J. Haley Jr. of Watertown, three daughters: Christine Lemon (Richard) of Boise, Idaho, Margaret McKane (Timothy) of Leavenworth, Kansas, Catherine Calender of Carthage, a granddaughter, Kate McKane of Lawrence, Kansas, a  grandson, Joseph McKane of Kansas and  a brother: Paul (Bonnie) Haley of Ogdensburg and nieces and nephews. A brother, Phillip Haley died in 2001.

Jerry will always be remembered for his love of life and family. He taught us and and many others how treating people well is always the way you will be remembered.   

There will be no funeral service or calling hours at this time. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
