Gretna……….Frank Tyler Midkiff, Sr. age 93 of Gretna died Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Gretna Health and Rehab Center.
Born June 11, 1920 in the Galveston Community and raised in the Ray Community near Gretna in Pittsylvania County. He was a son of the late Pearly Jake Midkiff and Tencie Bowler Midkiff. Mr. Midkiff was predeceased by his wives Martha Jane Head Midkiff in 1971 and Georgia Haymes “Bobby” Midkiff in 1996; his two sons, Frank Tyler Midkiff, Jr., US Navy retired, and Dr. James Herbert Midkiff, DDS; and three brothers, Pearly Jake Midkiff, Jr., Ellis Henry Midkiff and his wife, Frances Hudson Midkiff, and Carroll Coleman Midkiff.
He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II and a long time, faithful member, Sunday school teacher and past deacon of Greenfield Baptist Church. Mr. Midkiff joined the US Navy in 1942 as a CB (Construction Battalion) and was sent to New Guinea. He later became a glazier and worked for the Dade County, FL schools, Maintenance Dept. for many years prior to moving back to Virginia after the death of his first wife. He retired from the Town of Gretna. He was proud of having read his Bible through several times.
He is survived by one daughter, Margaret Midkiff Wilson Midkiff and her husband, Kenneth W. of Gretna; two daughters in law, Kathy Woods Midkiff of Oak Harbor, WA and Susan Hancock Midkiff of Roanoke, two sons, Jerry Edward Midkiff and his wife Patricia Shelton Midkiff of Raleigh, NC and Fred Ramsey Midkiff, Jr. and his wife, Valicia Durden Midkiff of Blue Ridge, GA; a sister-in-law, Alease Shelton Midkiff of Gretna; grandchildren, Billy Wilson, Robin and Earl Taylor, Melanie and Wade Quarles, Jon and Debbie Wilson, Jamie Wilson, Dennis and Mimi Midkiff, Danny Midkiff, Dion and Janea Midkiff, Jill and Joe D’Agostino, Tyler Midkiff and Angelia, Adam and Andrea Midkiff, Jake and Jackie Midkiff, Kevin and Megan Midkiff, Amanda M. and Scott Luton, Ramsey and Beth Midkiff, and Daniel Midkiff; 24 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Sunday, May 4, 2014 at Greenfield Baptist Church by Rev. R.G. Rowland. Burial with Military Honors by the US Navy Funeral Honor Guard Unit will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends following the service Sunday in the church fellowship hall.
