Laura Dahl, wife of Robert Weinhardt, daughter of George and Carol Dahl, sister of Karin Dahl, passed away peacefully at home in the early morning of Wednesday April 30, 2014 after a brave and extended struggle with peritoneal cancer. Born in Grand Forks, North Dakota on May 18, 1962, she then grew up in King of Prussia and Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, attending Radnor High School. Laura went on to double major in biology and chemistry at Dickinson College and pursued post-graduate studies at Michigan State University. Laura worked at various biotech and research jobs but found her true passion in caring for animals.
Laura lived with her husband Bob in various locations in Northern Virginia for over 20 years and was especially happy to call their house in Purcellville home, where she felt as if she was on vacation every day. She enjoyed watching birds and deer as they passed by the windows.
She was an avid reader and movie enthusiast, exploring many genres from science to science fiction, culture and history to comedy, and more. Her enthusiasm for music was similarly broad as she enjoyed classical, jazz, and rock, and played saxophone, flute, and drums. Laura especially loved the outdoors. Throughout her life, hiking, camping, walks, and bicycle riding all brought her great joy.
Although reserved and private at times, Laura nevertheless leaves behind deep friendships, as well as the respect of those who watched her struggle with her illness. She was strong and determined, yet had a quirky, playful, sometimes silly, sometimes sharp edged, sense of humor. She will be missed by more people than she may have realized, and some animals too, in particular her dog Sammo.
In lieu of flowers, it is asked that donations be directed to your local animal shelters, or the Foundation for Women's Cancer.
A remembrance will be held in the afternoon of May 18th. For details please email Robert Weinhardt at firstname.lastname@example.org
