Marie Elizabeth (Pepe) Spino, 89, received her angel wings on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at North Care Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri. After her stroke in 1987, she was unable to speak (aphasia) and her right hand was paralyzed, but her strong will to live and the love and prayers of family and friends carried her through 27 more years. Marie had an unwavering faith in God and also devotion to Mary, St. Jude and Mother Cabrini. In her final days she found comfort in the recitation of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet.
She was born on April 17, 1925 in Kansas City, Missouri to Mariannina (DeMayo) Pepe and Giuseppe “Joe” Pepe. She was the youngest of nine children – Joe Tutera, Susie Tutera, Rosie Scudiero, Margaret Saponieri, Lucy Cervello, Frank Tutera, Tosca Como and Dominic Pepe, all deceased.
Known for her smile, Marie possessed a sweet and simple demeanor and all who met her loved her. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling and laughter will never be forgotten by family and friends.
As a young woman she worked at Harzfeld’s downtown in the shoe department. Her love of shoes has been passed down to her children and grandchildren. She married the late Joseph Nazio Spino in 1947 and their reception was held at the Little Theatre where her father worked. Marie and her husband owned and operated Spino’s Grill on Independence Avenue in the late 1960’s early 1970’s. She also worked at the BINGO hall on Saturday evenings in Kansas City, Kansas. Years later she was a waitress at another family restaurant, Anthony’s on Grand.
Her husband passed away in 1985 from lung cancer but married for 38 years, Marie and Joe raised three children, Izzy, Jeanne and Mary Jo Spino. Possessing a true servant’s heart, Marie faithfully cared for family and friends through delicious baking and cooking from scratch, hosting every holiday at her house and opening her door to everyone in the neighborhood. With a real zest for life, Marie loved music, Garth Brooks, getting her hair and nails done, watching the Royals, dancing, traveling, playing card games, BINGO and especially loved being with her family. Over the past few years while residing at New Mark, she looked forward to us bringing her food, some of her favorites included cheeseburgers, hot fudge sundaes and peanut butter cups.
Her surviving family members include her three children and their partners: Izzy Spino, Jeanne and Steve Morgan, Mary Jo Spino and Nino Bruno. Grandmother to eight: Christin Rivera, Luis Rivera, Michaela Brogoto, Ali Morgan, Nico Brogoto, Lilliana Spino, Joseph Spino and Jenny Marie Spino. In-Law’s: Pearl Cervello, Juanita (Pat) Pepe; and a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family requests no flowers but asks that you do a loving act of kindness, by making someone laugh, sending a card, giving a hug or saying “I love you” to someone in Marie’s memory, our Angel who lived, laughed and loved.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Passantino Bros. Funeral Home, 2117 Independence Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64124, where the Rosary will be prayed at 10:30 a.m. The Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 6415 NE Antioch Rd., Gladstone, MO 64119. Burial to follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, visits and support in many heart-felt forms from too many people to name individually, but including staff at North Care Hospice House and New Mark Care Center.
