Richard S Stone

U.S. Veteran

Richard S. Stone, 83, of Tiverton passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of the late Doris (Colwell) Stone. Born in Winchendon, MA, he was a son of the late Stanley and Irene I. (Reed) Stone.

A Korean War Veteran, Mr. Stone had joined the service as a teenager, and proudly served in The United States Navy. He advanced to head of the foundry aboard the USS Yosemite until his retirement due to disability. He was briefly a bookkeeper for Ashworth’s Foundry in Somerset, MA, then joined the Civil Service as an administrative assistant and dispatcher for the U.S. Naval Hospital in Newport until retirement. He was an award winning fresh water fisherman, a pilot, a photographer, an avid reader, and as a young man was a skilled hunter. He was a life member of the Tiverton Rod and Gun Club, where he was proud to have held every elected office, and had also been a RI Game Warden. He was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association.

He leaves his daughter, Ellen C. Stone of Westerly, RI; brothers Foster Stone of Gardner, MA, Leonard Stone of New Hampshire, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews including Karen, Kathy, Joni, Linda, and their families. He was predeceased by his siblings, Walter Stone, Violet Robinson, and Barbara Mason.

The family is so extremely grateful to the wonderful staff and residents at Silver Creek Manor, Bristol, RI who became his extended family and made his final years happy ones. We are grateful for the excellent care he received throughout his long life from the Veteran's Hospital's, Beacon Hospice, and finally R.I. Hospital. We are also thankful to all of his wonderful friends and colleagues who visited him and kept in touch during his many years of illness.

His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday May 3, at 11:00 am in POCASSET MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 462 Main Road, Tiverton. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Pocasset Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday May 2 from 4-7 pm. www.almeida-pocasset.com

In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to the Silver Creek Manor Activities Fund, 7 Creek Lane, Bristol, RI 02809 would be appreciated.
