U.S. Veteran

Philo Brower, age 71, passed away peacefully at his home in Big Springs on February 26, 2014, surrounded by family.

He was born on May 14, 1942, to John David Lashley and Alice Edell Lashley in Orange County, CA. He is survived by his mother Edell, his daughter Seraphina Brower (her mother Anne Micheal), and his sisters Cheryl Lashley-Banks and Connie Lashley.

Philo grew up in southern California and served in the U.S. Army from 1959 through 1962, spending most of that time stationed in Korea. He moved to Siskiyou County in 1977 and lived in Dunsmuir for 20 years before moving to Big Springs.

Philo loved animals, was a skilled carpenter, horseman, marksman, skier and an avid outdoorsman and adventurer. He spent many years as a mountaineer and climbing guide on Mt. Shasta and the surrounding mountains. In 1980 he was part of the first cross-country skiing expedition to circumnavigate Mt. Shasta above tree line, an accomplishment he would hold dear for the rest of his life.

In his later years, Philo spent most of his time and energy clearing his land in Big Springs and building his picturesque ranch where he enjoyed spending time with his daughter and his animals, working in his garden and patrolling for snakes.

Philo Brower was a kind and loving man with a sharp wit and an infectious smile. The mischievous sparkle in his eyes will live on in the memories of everyone who’s path he crossed.

A celebration of Philo’s life will be held at his ranch on May 17 at 3pm for those who knew and loved him.
