RICHARD D. COURTNEY

Richard Daniel Courtney, 83, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville, Kentucky.

Born January 20, 1931, in DeKalb, the son of Thomas Earl and Helen (Diedrich) Courtney, Richmarried Toinette Weiler on October 4, 1952, in McHenry.

He was the owner of University Shop in DeKalb. Rich later worked in the men’s departments at Carson Pirie Scott and at Kuppenheimer. He later was employed by Twin Tavern in DeKalb.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of DeKalb Elks’ Club. He was a member of Fertile Fathers bowling league and coached Little League baseball.

 He is survived by his children, Richard D. Courtney Jr. of Dallas, Texas,  Steven Courtney of Chic ago, Valerie (Tim) Pieroni of Sycamore, Mary (Dave) Todnem of Louisville, Kentucky, Stephanie Govig of Sycamore and Nancy (James) Schmidt of McHenry; grandchildren, Morgan, Megan, Rob, Courtney, Annie, Katie, Joe, Nathan, Carrie, Ryan and Scott; great-grandchildren, Sophie, Sadie, Lacey, Lillie, Liem, Scarlett and Hayden; brother, Bob (Vivian) Courtney of DeKalb; sister, Joanne Quinlan of Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife; son-in-law, John Govig; and daughter, Charlene.

The family thanks all the people who encouraged him and enhanced Rich’s life, especially those at the Lincoln Inn restaurant in DeKalb, Rich’s friends at Kishwaukee Family YMCA, and his bowling buddies at Twins.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 30, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 Pine Street, DeKalb, with Fr. James Parker celebrating. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, DeKalb.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 29, at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with a wake service at 7:45 p.m.
