On October 24, 1947, she married Paul Denys Cote, and they had four children: Mary Ruth, Paul Denys, Lisa Que and Luke Samuel.

She grew up swimming in Lake Michigan while living in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and visiting her grandparents on their farm near Waukon during the summers. She also lived for a short time in Ventura, California and Omaha, Nebraska.

Joyce belonged to P.E.O., United Methodist Church, Luther College Women’s Club, Girl Scouts, Northeast Iowa Quilter’s Guild, Garden Club, (in which she won many awards for her flower arranging), Bridge Club, Birthday Club, and Phat Club. She earned the Master Gardener’s certification through the Iowa State University Extension Service. She loved spending time at their cabin with her family on the Mississippi River, hiking, and attending aquacise at the pool.

Joyce became a resident of Aase Haugen Home in June of 2009.

Survivor’s include two sons, Paul Cote and his wife Jane of Appleton, Wisconsin; Luke Cote and his wife Sue of Decorah, Iowa; and two daughters, Mary Carman of North Falmouth, Massachusetts; and Lisa Lien and her husband David of Midland, Michigan; and eight grandchildren, Theodore, Jacob and Nathan Cote; Zachary and Mimi Carman; and Benjamin, Samuel, and Molly Lien.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Paul on July 5, 1994, and her brother Charles.
