John Elwood Strickland, age 67, of Florala passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014 in an Andalusia hospital. He was born in Florala on March 11, 1947 to James (Buddy) Strickland and Lillian Johnston Strickland. After graduating from Florala High School, John enlisted in the United States Air Force and proudly served his country. He returned home and enrolled at Southern Mississippi and graduated in 1975 earning his degree in dietics. John was the executive chef for Morrison Cafeteria for many years until he retired and returned home to open Starlight Grill in Florala. John was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading Wilber Smith novels. In his spare time he loved to fish and hunt and he enjoyed playing golf. He had a wonderful sense of humor and never met a stranger. John's smile and loving ways will be truly missed.
John is survived by his son, Steven Strickland of Meadows Place, Texas, daughter, Elizabeth Norden and husband Andrew of Chesapeake, Virginia, brothers, Jim Strickland and wife Rachel Lackey of Bryson City, North Carolina, Larry Strickland and wife Sherry of Andalusia and Neal Strickland and wife Glenda of Pensacola. John is also survived by two grandchildren, Ashlyn and Taelyr Norden. John was preceded in death by father, James (Buddy) Strickland and mother, Lillian Johnston Strickland.
A time of visitation will be Saturday, April 19, 2014 from 2 until 3 P.M. at Evans Funeral Home with the memorial service beginning at 3 P.M. with Jim Strickland officiating.
