Paul Thomas

                               SFC Paul Thomas, United States Army (Retired) reported for duty in God's Army at Willis Knighton Medical Center in Bossier City, LA, on April 11, 2014.  He was born September 13, 1930 in Emerson, AR, to the late Jessie and the late Alto (Doss) Thomas.

   Funeral services with full military honors will be held at Columbia District Christian Center (Youngblood Auditorium), 611 S. Madison, Magnolia, on Saturday, April 19, 1:00 p.m. with officiants Evangelist Hanna Coble and Rev. Clifton White and under the direction of Henderson Funeral Service.  Burial is scheduled for April 22, 2014, at the Arkansas State National Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock, AR.  Visitation will be from noon until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 18, at Henderson's Mortuary, 614 Calhoun Rd., Magnolia.

   At an early age, Paul joined Pine Hill CME Church, and also became a member of Forest Grove CME.  He attended school in Emerson, AR.  Shortly after graduating from McMittress High School, he enlisted in the United States Army and served twenty-seven years including tours of duty in Vietnam, Germany, Fort Greely Alaska, Fort Chaffee Arkansas, Fort Bliss Texas, Fort Knox Kentucky, and finally at Fort Campbell Kentucky, where he retired in 1977.  SFC Thomas received numerous decorations including two Bronze Stars, the Meritorious Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four campaign stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Sixty Device, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm for Valor and Heroic Conduct in battle, two Overseas Service Bars, Army of Occupation Medal (Germany), National Defense Service Medal 1st OLC, and Good Conduct Medal (3rd Award).

   After retirement, he attended Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN, where he studied Business Management.  Paul held management positions at Fort Knox Officer's Club and Fort Campbell Bowling Alleys. He later relocated to Columbia County, AR, where he was employed as a Security Officer at SMI.

   Paul married the love of his life, Flossie Biddle, on March 6, 1955, and enjoyed spending time with his family, working on his vehicles, gardening and volunteering his service to help others.  Paul was a lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans Association, Non-Commission Officers Association, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, AARP, Masons, and Columbia County Crisis Center.

   He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Darnell Thomas, and a sister, Joyce Rhymes.

   Paul was a husband, father, grandfather, and soldier, always, and will be greatly missed by those who had a chance to know the real SFC Paul Thomas.  God rest his soul.  Survivors include his beloved wife, Flossie Biddle Thomas, Magnolia, AR; eight sons, Tommy Earl Thomas, Dallas, TX, James (Maria) Thomas, Pontiac, MI, Atty Edward Taylor, Detroit, MI, Dr. Demetrius (Mary) Thomas, Clarksville, TN, Frederick Thomas, Seattle, WA, Jefferey Taylor, Donald Thomas and Bernard Thomas of Magnolia, AR; two daughters, Jocelyn Green, Kansas City, KS, and Jacqueline King, Lawton, OK; twenty-three grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one brother, Carnell (Gloria) Thomas, Emerson, AR, two sisters, Gwendolyn McDowell, Emerson, AR and Maggie Wells, Milwaukee, WI, and nieces and nephews.
