Elder Robert Lee Cannon, 79, of Jacksonville, Arkansas, formerly of South Bend, Indiana passed away on March 26, 2014 at Baptist Health Medical Center, Springhill, after an extended illness. He was born September 18, 1934 to the union of Charles Lee Cannon and Annabelle Jane (Dempsey) Cannon. He was a Native of South Bend, Indiana and relocated to Arkansas in 2004.
Robert graduated from Central High School in 1952. He was a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from 1954 to 1957, where he was a sound pound operator and radio man. He received his electrical engineering degree from DeVry Technical Institute of Chicago, 1957-58. He was employed by Conn Organ of Elkhart, Indiana, 1958-78. He was also employed by, and retired from, Bendix Corporation, now known as Honeywell International, from 1978-04, where he tested and calibrated fuel controls that attach to aircraft engines. He spent his retirement years driving a school bus for Pulaski Special School District in Arkansas 2005-present. He drove the grade school and high school students and that kept him engaged and active throughout his retirement years.
He united with New Life Church of God in Christ in 2004. He was a faithful member throughout the church, community and district. In 2010 he was ordained as a minister under the leadership of Pastor Samuel Floyd. He enjoyed teaching Sunday School every Sunday morning. He enjoyed spending time with his family, cooking ribs on the grill was one of his specialties. He will be greatly missed from Arkansas to Indiana.
Left to cherish his memory, his wife, Etta Cannon (Jackie); one daughter, Monica (Tony) Felder of Indianapolis, Indianapolis; two step-daughters: Sharon Bright of North Little Rock, Arkansas, and Tarsha Seward of Long Beach, California; one sister, Hilda Boney of South Bend, Indiana; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; neices, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Also surviving is his former wife, Lylene Cannon of South Bend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Lee Cannon and Annabelle Jane (Dempsey) Cannon of South Bend, Indiana; his daughter, Bridget Hardy also of South Bend, Indiana; his sister, Patricia Greer; his brother Reginald Cannon both of Lansing, Michigan; and his stepson, James Seward of Irvine, California.
Memorial services for Elder Robert Lee Cannon will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014 in First AME Zion Church, 801 N. Eddy Street, South Bend.
