Jean Atmore Mars

Jean Atmore Mars, 88,
passed away in peace at
Solvay Hospice House
surrounded in love by her
family on April 6, 2014.
Jean was born in Duluth
on March 10, 1926.
Jean was a graduate of
Stanbrook Hall ('43) and
the University of Minnesota,
Minneapolis ('47).
With her Journalism degree,
Jean was employed
as an advertising copy
writer at Oreck's department
store and the Duluth
News Tribune and Herald
where she was the editor
of the Sunday shopping
page. Her "Spotlight by
Jean", a women's fashion
column, ran in the Sunday
edition. She also taught
Journalism at Stanbrook
Throughout her life,
Jean was an active board
member and volunteer of
Jr. League, Alpha Phi National
Sorority, Friends of
Duluth Public Library,
United Way of Duluth,
Duluth Summer Festival of
the Arts, Duluth Bicentennial
Commission, Duluth
Ballet, Metropolitan Opera
Committee, AFS, Meals on
Wheels, League of Women
Voters, St. Louis
County Heritage and Arts
Center and Duluth Women's
Institute. Jean was
especially proud of her
appointment by then Governor
Al Quie to the Minnesota
State Arts Board.
Jean believed that "the
arts enhance our environment
and creativity and
should be considered an
important natural resource
for the State of
Minnesota". Forever curious
and searching for
knowledge, Jean helped
launch the Emeritus College
at the College of St.
Scholastica. Emeritus is a
program for lifelong
learners taught by community
members designed
to enrich the lives
of adults. Jean continued
her participation in many
of the class offerings
throughout her years.
Jean is preceded in
death by her mother,
Grace Atmore; father,
George Atmore; and
brother Dr. William Atmore.
Jean is survived by her
brother Robert (Carolyn
Cole) Atmore of Minnetonka;
children, Martha
Mars, Atlanta, Ga., Mary
(Johnie) Ostman of Duluth,
Katie (Jim) Spreitzer
of Duluth, William (Corinne)
Mars of Shakopee,
and Sara Curwin of Duluth.
Jean will be remembered
as a gracious, kind
and delightful Nana by
grandchildren Sara, Molly,
Peter, Laura, Robert, Rachel,
Alex, Grace, Logan,
Hannah, Ingrid and great
grandchild Cameron.
Jean valued her dear
friends and considered
their friendship irreplaceable.
JEAN'S LIFE: 2 p.m. on
Saturday, April 12, 2014 in
Our Lady Queen of Peace
Chapel at the College of
St. Scholastica. A gathering
of friends and family
reception will follow at
Somers Lounge. Arrangements
provided by Dougherty
Funeral Home.
