Kathleen Mary (Schultz) Newman -
After a 6-month struggle with declining health, Kathy passed away peacefully on Monday, April 7th, 2014 at her home of 34 years, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on October 5, 1947, Kathy was the first child of Katherine (Kurncz) and Jack Seibert. Later, after her parents divorced, her mother married Kenneth Schultz; they created a home for their children from their previous marriages and then expanded the family. Kathy took her role as eldest daughter seriously and always watched over her younger siblings.
After graduating from Owosso High School in the Class of 1966, Kathy took some college courses and worked at several jobs in Owosso. At one point, seeking expanded horizons and fresh opportunities, she moved to Chicago. However, she had begun a romance with Rob Newman in Owosso that just kept growing and deepening. Finally, once Rob proposed marriage, Kathy bowed to the inevitable and returned to Owosso. They were married on November 30, 1968 at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
After becoming Mrs. Robert E. Newman Jr., Kathy began working at Giant Foods in Owosso and, later, in Midland. Rob's family owned Bob's Tire & Auto Repair in Owosso, and Rob joined the family firm. He was the third generation in the business and soon became a partner. Kathy and Rob built a life together based on love, hard work, and shared goals. They also had a lot of fun. And, in 1973, they were delighted to welcome their son, Christopher, into their world. They moved to a warm and welcoming home on several acres in Henderson. In time, they began to travel extensively, usually to warmer climates. Kathy especially loved to be on vacation on her birthday.
Rob eventually became sole owner of the business and Kathy scaled back her working hours by taking a part-time job at the Henderson Post Office, where her cheery attitude and warm personality earned her the affection of the clientele. Kathy eventually retired. Then, in 2005, tragedy rocked her world when Rob developed cancer and died very quickly. Regrouping, Kathy found consolation in her family. She also treasured frequent trips to the Detroit casinos with her sister, Sue.
Kathy is survived by her son, Christopher; her sisters, Sue and husband Larry McCloud, Judy and husband Terry Ochidnicky, Jan and husband Jeff Douglas, and Jacqueline West; her brother, Jerry Schultz and his wife Vicky; her brother-in-law, Scott Newman; dear friend, Marlene Passow, and several nieces and nephews and their children.
Kathy's warm heart was moved by any animal in need and, over the decades, she gave a lifetime home to many stray cats who found their way to her door. Therefore, the family suggests that any donations made in Kathy's memory go to the Shiawassee County Humane Society.
A Mass of Christian Faith will be held at 11 AM Thursday, April 10th at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a memorial luncheon immediately following at St. Joseph Catholic School gymnasium. Honoring Kathy's wishes there will be no viewing or visitation prior to the funeral mass.
