Donald Lee Owens, age 65 of White Cloud, entered into his eternal home on Friday, March 28, 2014 at his sister Carrie’s home. Donald was born on October 20, 1948 in McComb, Mississippi, the third eldest of eight children born to Hollis and Mary Lillian (Baker) Owens. The family moved from Mississippi to Chicago, Illinois when Donald was two years old.
Donald graduated from John Marshall High School in Chicago and attended Malcolm X College where he enrolled in computer classes. Soon after his enrollment, Donald enlisted in the United States Army where he served a tour of duty in Korean in the communication field. Upon his return to Chicago, he was involved in an automobile accident and after his accident moved to White Cloud to reunite with his family.
Donald had been a very personable person and enjoyed entertaining people with his jokes and stories of his experiences. Donald had enjoyed walking, biking and martial arts and had earned a black belt in the martial arts prior to his automobile accident. Donald loved to read and his favorite subjects were history and math. Donald also enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. He loved life and lived a good life. Donald had a cool walk and was known for it to many and would sometimes demonstrate his walk.
On Friday, March 28, 2014 at 2:15pm, after a short illness, Donald Lee Owens left this life to be with our heavenly father. He leaves to cherish his memory, two sisters and four brothers. Carrie Dorsey of Woodland Park, Michigan; Rosetta Powell of Aurora, Illinois; Hollis Owens of White Cloud, Michigan; Kenneth Dewayne Owens of White Cloud, Michigan; Charles Owens of White Cloud, Michigan; Larry Owens of Bitely, Michigan; and will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. Donald was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lillian Owens; his father Hollis Owens; and by his brother, Samuel Edwards Owens.
A special recognition goes to his sister, Carrie who faithfully cared for Donald the last five years of his life and was at his bedside when he made the transition. Carrie wishes to say, “it was an honor and privilege to care for her brother Donald.
TIME OF WAKE : Friday, April 4, 2014 from 4-7pm at Crandell Funeral Home – White Cloud Chapel and Saturday from 11-12 at the First Baptist Church of Woodland Park. HOMEGOING CELEBRATION: Saturday, April 4, 2014 with MILITARY RITES given at 12pm at the First Baptist Church of Woodland Park 9028 23rd Ave Bitely MI 49309 with services to follow with Pastor Denise Suttles presiding.
