Dr. Toof Boone, Jr.

After an extended illness, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend completed his earthly journey and passed peacefully at home to be with his Lord and Savior on Monday, March 24, 2014. He was surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Vineville United Methodist Church. Dr. Jimmy Asbell and the Reverend Jimmy Duke will officiate. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery.   Visitation will be between 5:00-7:00PM on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Hart’s at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31204; Pine Pointe Hospice, 6261 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia 31210; or H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, Florida 33612.

Dr. Boone was born in Macon, Georgia on September 6, 1934 to Mozelle Dekle Boone and Dr. Toof A. Boone, Sr. He attended Lanier High School where he graduated at the top of his class. He attained All-Region and All-State honors in basketball. While in undergraduate school at Emory University and Mercer University he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He played basketball for Mercer. He completed dental school at the University of Tennessee with high honors. He was a member of Delta Sigma Delta and Class President.

Dr. Boone served in the United States Navy attached to the Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, California and the Marine Division in Okinawa.

Dr. Boone was a natural athlete and a lover of all sports. He held in highest regard his tennis championships of the Far Eastern Marines and his championships at Idle Hour Club. In the summer of 1962 he married the love of his life, Sylvia Wyllys of Winter Haven, Florida. Sylvia joined him to stay in Philadelphia where he received his Orthodontic training at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine. He achieved highest class honors. He and Sylvia returned to Macon where they have spent their life together. They raised their three daughters, Mary Catherine, Anna, and Kate at their home of thirty-one years in historic Stanislaus.

Dr. Boone has been the recipient of many dental and civic awards. He received the H.H. Johnson Memorial Award for “Dentist of the Year.” He was elected to the prestigious American College of Dentists. He was honored as a founder and participant of over 30 years to Children’s Medical Services. He was a past president of the Central District Dental Society, an American Board Orthodontist, a member of the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, the Southern Society of Orthodontists, and the Central District Dental Society. He was a member and past board member of Vineville United Methodist Church. He was an associate member of Blowing Rock Methodist Church in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, a member of Idle Hour Club, and a past member of Rotary International.  

Dr. Boone was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and was happiest when he was with his family. In later years, he had taken up golf and loved spending time with his golf “buddies.” He had always loved his orthodontic work and the satisfaction his patients brought to him.

Dr. Boone is survived by his bride of 52 years, Sylvia Wyllys; his three daughters, Mary Catherine Boone Council (Ward) of Marietta, Anna Boone Haley (Josh) of Amelia Island, Florida, and Kate Boone (fiance’, Will Reid) of Macon; five grandchildren, Robert Austen Council, Catherine Caroline Council, John Hunter Council, Austen Elliott Haley, and Henry Rees Haley; brother, Robert Milton Boone (Nell) of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Susan and Dick Wallace of Savannah, Georgia; two nieces, Jennifer Boone West (Tommy) and Susan Boone Drummond (David); and one nephew, Richard Wallace.
