Harold Hugh “Bud” “Cotton” Mitchell, 84 passed away on Friday, March 21, 2014 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg, VA. He was born in Sugar Grove, WV on March 19, 1930, the son of the late Hugh and Gertrude (Puffenbarger) Mitchell. On July 19, 1956, Harold married Ellen McLaughlin Mitchell, who survives in Sugar Grove. Mr. Mitchell was a 1948 graduate of Franklin High School and a member of Calvary Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Sugar Grove VFW Post #9666 and a charter member of the Sugar Grove Lions Club. Harold was a Air Force Veteran of the Korean War, where he was a radar technician from 1951-1955. He retired in 1993 as a Machinist. He was also a land surveyor for a number of years. Mr. Mitchell was the recipient of the Golden Horseshoe Award and he sang in the Sugar Grove Mens Chorus. Harold loved spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed gardening and sitting on his front porch watching the humming birds and traffic. In addition to his wife, Mr. Mitchell is survived by: a daughter, Cary Hevener and husband George of Brandywine, WV; a son, Hugh Mitchell and wife Pat of Charlottesville, VA; 6 sisters, Helon Pitsenbarger of Hyattsville, MD, Margene Moore of Knoxville, TN, Billie Bowling of Onancock, VA, Anna Gae Hughes of Harrisonburg, Jackie Trisler and husband Bill of Jonesboro, GA, Peggy Wade of Dallas, TX; a brother, Tom Mitchell and wife Paula of Sugar Grove; 3 grandchildren, Whit Mitchell and wife Lauren of Elon, NC, Tyler Mitchell of Charlottesville, Jordan Hevener of Morgantown, WV; 21 nieces and nephews; 39 great nieces and nephews; and 30 great-great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by: 2 nieces, Trudy Stewart, Kim Hughes; a nephew, Timothy Mitchell; and a great nephew, Andrew Peff. Mr. Mitchell's family will receive friends on Sunday, March 23, 2014, 6-8 PM at Calvary Lutheran Church in Sugar Grove. A celebration of life will be on Monday, March 24, 2014 at 11:00 AM with Pastors Jessie and Jason Felici officiating. Interment will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery, Sugar Grove.
