Roberta S. Dare, age 81 of Elwood, and formerly of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at her residence in Elwood following a brief illness. She was born January 28, 1933 in Mishawaka, the daughter of Charles and Thelma (Wilson) Smith. She retired from St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka in 1992 where she had worked as a Registered Nurse for many years; and also formerly worked at Elkhart General Hospital. She married Glennard U. “Jerry” Dare on September 2, 1951. Roberta was a devoted member of the East United Methodist Church in Mishawaka for more than 70 years and had recently attended the First United Methodist Church in Elwood where her son is the minister. Roberta enjoyed crocheting and quilting, and had traveled extensively to 48 of the United States, Canada, Europe, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany, England, and France. She was a terrific cook and enjoyed canning vegetables for her family. Over the years, she was active in many church functions including Bible studies, card ministry, choir, and various church committees. She will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Roberta’s family includes her husband of more than 62 years, Glennard U. “Jerry” Dare of Elwood and formerly of Mishawaka; daughter, Cynthia White of Orlando; 3 sons, Rev. Christopher (wife Rhonda) Dare of Elwood, Shannon (wife Becky) Dare of Cedar Park, Texas, and Tim (wife Karen) Dare of Colorado Springs, CO; half-brother, Bill (wife Cheryl) Bupp; half-sister, Sarah (husband David) Peterson; half-brother, Charles (wife Wanda) Smith; sister-in-law, Susan Smith; 2 brothers-in-law, Richard Dare and William “Bill” Dare; 16 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Roberta was preceded in death by her parents; a son Andrew Dare; and her brother Raymond Smith.
A funeral service celebrating Roberta’s life will be conducted at 6:00 PM on Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Ron Becker officiating and members of her family speaking. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 PM prior to the funeral at the funeral home. A 2nd committal funeral service will be held at the Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel in Mishawaka on Friday, March 14, 2013 at 1:00 PM with Rev. Mark Zerkel officiating, and will also include an hour of visitation prior to the service for friends in the Mishawaka area. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
