Ruben Leroy “Rube” Carlson, age 82 of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 6, 2014, surrounded by his family at Community Parkview Care Center in Elwood after an extended illness. He was born November 20, 1931 in Barnum, Minnesota, the son of George and Anna (Mattson) Carlson. Rube retired in 1994 from the Chrysler Corporation in Kokomo where he was an electrician for more than 30 years. He graduated from Barnum High School in 1949 and then worked on his family’s farm. At age 19, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953 as a member of “E” Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Regiment. He married Dorothy M. Hilligoss on March 27, 1954, and they moved to Silver Bay, MN where he worked for Reserve Mining Co. in plant protection. They returned to Elwood about 5 years later. Rube was a devoted member of the First Missionary Baptist Church in Elwood for over 50 years. On summer weekends, he spent time at Lake Wawasee where he especially enjoyed attending church services on the “S.S. Lilly Pad”. Rube was a member of the Korean Veteran’s Club in Anderson, a long-time member of the Elwood Kiwanis Club, and the U.A.W. #1066 in Kokomo. He enjoyed the challenge of rebuilding old lawn mowers and tractors that he found at garage sales - often to provide them to people who needed them. He also enjoyed fishing in Minnesota, hunting, playing the organ, and going to garage sales. One of his relaxing joys was taking long rides on his scooter, both in Elwood and at the lake. Rube and Dorothy would have celebrated their 60th anniversary on the 27th of this month. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather; and he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Rube’s family includes his wife of nearly 60 years, Dorothy M. Carlson of Elwood; 2 daughters, Linda Sue (husband Robert) Fisher of Anderson and Diane Elaine Carlson of Fishers; 2 granddaughters, Christie Lynn Dowling of Anderson and Tracie Lee (husband Brad) Davis of Anderson; 3 great-grandchildren, Mikaylie Davis, Caleb Davis and Cameron Dowling all of Anderson; several nieces and nephews; and beloved dog “Annie”.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 siblings, Everett Carlson, Edwin Carlson, Violet Olsen, Lorraine Laiti, and Ardelle Peterson.
A Service celebrating Ruben’s life will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Joe Searcy of the First Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army and the Elwood VFW Honor Guard. Visitation for family and friends will be from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the funeral home prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Missionary Baptist Church or the Elwood Animal Shelter through the funeral home. Online condolences: www.copherfeslermay.com.
