JOHN WARREN SIMMONS, son of the late Bettina and Willie Simmons, was born April 12, 1927 in Baskerville, VA and departed this life at his home on March 2, 2014. He was the 6th of 12 children. He was predeceased by his brother Sterling Simmons, Sr. and sisters, Lillie Andrews, Roberta Gaskins, Dorothy Hardy and Annie Davis. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and joined the Sharon Baptist Church where he remained a faithful member. He was ordained as a deacon there. Over the years he served faithfully in several church positions such as trustee, superintendent of Sunday school and choir member. For many years, John’s health declined and although the last year was particularly trying, he never lost his faith in God and continued to lean on him for strength and healing. For the last few months, he expressed only one wish, and that was to go “Home” and “to have Jesus come.” He could be heard singing “ I want to be ready.” On May 4, 1946 he married Maria Evans. They shared 67 joyful years together. To this union one son and two daughters were born. John was a farmer at heart and loved to spend time meeting, greeting and talking with people. He had a way of making people laugh and had a good time when they were around him. He will be dearly missed by his devoted, wife, Maria Simmons of the home; Son, John Wayne (Louise) Simmons of King William, VA; Daughters, Betty (Wayne) Brown of Milton, MA and Glorious (Willie) Bennett of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren, Jabahri (Neelum) Simmons, Kenneth (Christine) Brown, Jenika Simmons, Natalie Bennett and Michael Brown, Sabrina (Qinn) Robinson, and Kerry (Roxanne) Johnson; seven great-grand children, Nyla Grocholski, Izias Simmons, Siyani Simmons, Charlotte Brown, Ihsan Simmons, Ellis Brown, Zara Simmons and Ariana Johnson. He also leaves to cherish his memory are brothers, Chester (Rosa) Simmons of Baskerville, VA, Ruben Simmons of Baskerville, VA, George Simmons of Athens, VT and Benjamin (Aleta) Simmons of Union, NJ; In addition he will be missed by sisters, Lucy Bugg of Decatur, GA and Sally Walker of Toledo, OH. He will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; especially supportive were Bettina and John Martin. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Sharon Baptist Church with the Rev, Garland Liggon, officiating and Rev. Earl Walker eulogizing. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be held at the funeral home on Friday, March 7, from 12:00 noon until 6:00 pm and a wake will be held from 6:00pm until 7:00pm. Viewing will also be held one hour before the service at the church. Services were entrusted to the staff of the Oris P. Jones Funeral Establishment, South Hill, Virginia.
