Joseph Russell James, 86, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at his home in rural Walker, MN. Joe was born on March 4, 1928 in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas to William Roland and Alta (Manus) James. He lived in Portia, Arkansas, until, when he was 15, his family moved to Lawndale, California, where he graduated from high school at the age of 17. Upon graduation, Joe joined the U.S. Marine Corp, and was stationed in China during World War II. When he returned from the war, he began working for Thrifty Drug Store in Lawndale. It was at Thrifty Drug Store that he met his future wife, Rose. Joe married Rose Phyllis Adams Johnson on January 22, 1949 in Kingman, Arizona. They raised four children in Lawndale, where they continued to live for 40 years. Joe worked for a time as a machinist for North American Aviation, but returned to Thrifty Drug Store and worked as a district manager in retail management until he retired in 1972, due to health issues. He and Rose then moved to Onigum, east of Walker, MN. They have continued to live there the rest of Joe’s life. He is well known in the Walker community. Joe is fondly remembered as a strict but kind father with a very good sense of humor. He was dedicated to the U.S. Marines throughout his life, and was a volunteer driver for area veterans for 12 years. He enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings, watching western movies, listening to country music, and he loved reading western novels. (He always wanted about eight more books than he was allowed to check out from the Walker Library)! Joe especially liked to help others and, his family recalls “he had a heart bigger than himself.” He is survived by his wife, Rose; two sons, Joseph R. (Mary Ellen) James, Jr, and Charles R. (Loretta) James; a daughter, Celesta R. (Lavern) Nelson; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack V. James; and a sister, Mary (Dan) Peterson. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Alta; two sisters, Martha Sue Thompson, and Melba Jean Davis; two brothers, Bob James, and Lonnie James; and daughter, Marlene Cabrera. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014, at the Dennis Funeral Home in Walker with Fr. George Ross officiating. Visitation will also be at the funeral home, one hour prior to services. Interment will be in Fort Ripley Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.
