Joan W Young of Riverview, Florida Passed away Feb. 25, 2014, born in Marietta, Ohio in 1922, first daughter (with twin sister, Jewel Burdette) in a family of 9 children by parents Herman and Kathryn Wagner. She was married to Charles H Young for 54 years before his death in 2000. They lived in North-Central Florida and Western North Carolina before retiring to Sun City Center in the mid-80s.
Joan was a Registered Nurse, Operating Room Supervisor and Mother of 4 children: Mark of Los Angeles, CA; Melissa of Riverview, FL; Daniel Reed of Wayne, NJ; Scott of London, UK; and 1 grandchild: Harrison Young of Maplewood, NJ. She was a breast cancer survivor since 1960, and her children are forever thankful that she stayed with us for 54 more years. She was the Best Mom Ever, and we now have a special angel in heaven.
She was crowned Ms Senior America of North Carolina in 1988, and as National Historian, wrote “The History of the Ms Senior America Pageant”. She was a pianist her whole life - after retirement, playing for weddings, banquets, fashion shows, birthdays and anniversaries. As a Licensed Music Therapist, she created sing-along programs for hospitals, nursing homes and Alzheimer’s/ Stroke patients all over southern Florida.
Joan was known by close friends and casual acquaintances of a kind, loving, caring, vivacious person who would do almost anything for you at the drop of a hat. Her warmth and humor will surely be missed. Thanks to Sun Towers/ Sun Terrace in Sun City Center, LifePath Hospice, and special gratitude to the staff of Central Park Nursing Home where she resided for over 3 years. Their personal attention, genuine concern and love for Joan are exemplary.
In place of flowers, donations would be greatly appreciated for the American Cancer Society, LifePath Hospice or Hillsborough County Animal Services. Thank you very much.
A memorial service will be held 12 to 3 p.m., Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 at the Pavialion Club House 3330 Manor Cove Cr. Riverview, Florida.
