Harry Arthur Coleman, 94, of Harrison Lane, Newport, died on Monday 24 February 2014 at the Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He married his wife of 64 years, Jean Julia (Sullivan), in 1947. Born on the 2nd of July 1919 in Newport, Rhode Island, Harry was the youngest of Rose Hilda (Mawson) and Frank Kennett Coleman’s seven children.
Harry, who was nicknamed Moe, graduated from Rogers High School in 1937. He served in the Navy during WWII as an electrician’s mate. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Harry worked at the Newport Naval Station until his retirement in 1976. He was an electrician at Salve Regina University for another 30 years. At Salve, he was nicknamed “Uncle Harry”. A lifelong Newporter, he frequented Cappy’s Hillside Café since opening night during the 1938 hurricane. Harry loved to dance and was well known at Christies. Following his retirement, he was a caregiver for his wife Jean, who passed away in 2010.
Harry is survived by two children, Harriet Coleman of Tiverton, RI and Kennett Coleman of Acton, MA, three grandchildren, and his sister, Ellen Nixon, of Middletown, Rhode Island along with his second families at Cappy’s and the Village House and friends throughout Newport.
Burial will be private. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. There will be a celebration of his life on Friday 7 March from 4 to 6 pm at Cappy’s Hillside Café, 8 Memorial Boulevard, Newport, Rhode Island.
