Carlton Eugene “Sonny” Allen, 83 year old long time Yreka resident, passed away Saturday morning, February 15, 2014 at his home in Yreka.

Sonny was born November 4, 1930 in Grants Pass, Oregon to Earl and Edna Allen and was raised in Grants Pass, Copco Lake and Yreka. Sonny graduated from Yreka High School in the class of 1949. In June, 1951, Sonny and Caroline Small were married in Reno, Nevada. After Sonny spent 2 years serving his country in the U.S. Army, he then went to work in the retail grocery business. He worked for Purity and Safeway grocery stores, retiring after 33 years.

Sonny loved hunting in many local areas and in Colorado. He was a lifetime Dodgers fan and loved watching and playing baseball. One of his favorite things was watching his children and grandchildren play many kinds of sports. Sonny also loved traveling with his trailer, along with friends and family, to the Oregon Coast and other areas in the Northwest. He enjoyed bowling & playing cards for many years.

Sonny is survived by his wife, Caroline, of Yreka; five daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Donald Swanson of Yreka, Sandra and Bill Arias of Yreka, Susan and Wally Halterman of Medford, Ore., Lisa and Lou Cosentino of Central Point, Ore and Nancy and Joe Joling, also of Central Point; two sons and their wives, James and Susan Allen of Yreka and Eugene and Lisa Allen of Bend, Ore.; 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Velma Freeman, Leona Shaw and Juanita.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation Friday evening, February 21, 2014 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Girdner Funeral Chapel in Yreka. The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., also at Girdner’s. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675
