Ray Whittaker Bennett

U.S. Veteran

Ray Whittaker Bennett, 74, of Rock Springs, Wyoming passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County. A longtime resident of Rock Springs, Wyoming and former resident of Evanston and Rawlins, Wyoming, Mr. Bennett passed away following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 26, 1939, the son of the late Elmer Bennett and Lela Whittaker.

Mr. Bennett attended schools in Evanston, Wyoming and graduated from Evanston High School with the Class of 1956.

He married Claudia Rollins in Evanston, Wyoming on January 3, 1975.

Mr. Bennett served in the United States Army and Air Force during the Vietnam Conflict.

He worked as a security officer for Questar Gas and also worked as a miner for Allied Chemical and a heavy equipment operator for Black Butte Coal.

His interests include shooting guns, music, watching military programs on television, riding motorcycles, making model airplanes.

Survivors include his wife Claudia Bennett of Rock Springs, Wyoming; seven sons Boyd Lester and wife Brenda of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Kenny Lester of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Daniel Bennett and companion Tanetta Jones of Hannibal, Missouri, Joseph Bennett of Rock Springs, Wyoming, Brian Bennett of Evanston, Wyoming, Michael Bennett of Rock Springs, Wyoming and Roy Bennett of Rock Springs, Wyoming; two daughters Michelle Hays and husband Shawn of Aurora, Texas and Amanda Cox and husband Ronnie of Craig, Colorado; eighteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and his beloved pets Calibur, Scrapi and Peanut.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother Roy N. Bennett and one daughter Lisa Bennett.

Following cremation a Memorial Services with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 A.M., February 21, 2014 at the Vase Funeral Chapel, 154 Elk Street, Rock Springs, Wyoming. Friends may call one hour prior to services.
